first, off,  I did watch the game, and it "felt" low-class for BSU to on-side kick at that point.  OTOH, the announcers went on and on about how these two teams truly hate each other; there was even some "extra curricular activity" between the players during the warm-up before the game, so perhaps BSU felt justified.  I agree with the poster who opined that BSU has to always go for blow-outs to try to get some national attention, but I don't know that you get it with plays like that
