Mizzou was a legitimate top ten team. To think that they wouldn't catch
their breath and come back with everything they had is silly. Gabbert is
going to play on Sundays, and his receivers made some terrific catches in
the second half. They wanted to win as much as we did, and they had just as
much to play for.
The second quarter concerned me. We went away from what worked, and TM
tried to get cute. Mizzou is too good to do that. They have the speed to
catch him when he goes east-west. The last series where TM played hurt was
ugly as well, and it highlighted that we need to develop our other QBs.
I think that a good analogy of the game is taking a car going 50MPH out of
5th gear and putting it in 3rd. There is an abrupt, and nasty transition as
it slows down, but when the car's speed matches the gear range, all is
copacetic. I saw that Saturday. Clearly, we're not the high speed
explosive offense with Lee that we are with Martinez, but we're also
steadier and more controllable. Neither is necessarily better, just
different, and we need both to finish the year. We also need to be able to
transition between the two more smoothly.
In all, I saw the most dominant quarter of football since the Q2 of the '96
Fiesta Bowl. It was foolish to think that any team could continue that kind
of intensity (and luck to a degree) for 60 minutes. In the last two games
I've watched our offense score explosively in every way possible, and
watched it grind out clock eating drives on the ground. And we had zero TOs
against Mizzou as well.
