Good for the Huskers. Interesting game.
I'm not much of a women's basketball fan, though I used to take my
girls to the professional games when we lived in Denver a few years
ago. A decent game to watch, but still missing that athleticism and
to some degree, a "basketball sense" that I look for in players. I
have watched some of the Husker games this year (OK, two). And I did
watch some of the first half and most of the second half last night on
ESPN360. What struck me more than anything else was the rather rough
game. In the men's game, defense is played by cutting off drives,
getting in the other player's face, and physically moving people out
of where they want to be, but without excessive contact or else you
get a whistle (yes, there is contact - the old saying, basketball is a
contact sport, football is a collision sport). Last night, defense,
and especially steals, were made by, to my eyes, rather obvious
muggings. A defensive player simply moves toward the ball handler, or
the ball, and tries to take it away. No finesse, no thought of trying
to avoid too much contact with the offensive player, just move in and
take the ball. Whammo! And no whistle!! I'm sort of surprised there
weren't a couple of bloody noses last night. Its a good thing the
Huskers shoot so well from the outside, and move the ball well, UCLA
was killing them (literally) inside.
I thought that was really odd. Was the game just called loosely by
the refs, or what? Any of you followers out there see the same thing,
or is it just my jaundiced eye?
