As expected Nebraska women's basketball team is the number 1 seed in the
Kansas City regional. A few interesting story lines.
Nebraska's opponent in the first game is Northern Iowa coached by Tonya
Warren. Connie Yori and Tonya Warren are the two greatest women's
basketball players in Creighton history. The only two that have had their
numbers retired at CU. Creighton was ahead of Northern Iowa by 8 points in
the conference tourney final with four minutes left in the game. They then
went scoreless the rest of the way, letting Northern Iowa score the last 9
points. Second year in row that Creighton lost the conference final in the
last seconds.
The other first round game at Minneapolis is UCLA-North Carolina St. North
Carolina State's point guard is the ACC freshman of the year Melissa
Kastanik(sp), a former all-state player at Lincoln SE who opted to go to
Raleigh rather than the home town school. That being said, I would not
trade our freshman point guard for her.
And if all the favorites make it to Kansas City, it will look more like a
football gathering than basketball. Nebraska, Oklahoma, Notre Dame with a
basketball name in Kentucky. All the games will be tough but Notre Dame
has there point guard back and will really be tough in the regional final.
