Men play above the rim and women play below the rim. Yes Tony Lambert, women play a fundamental game and there is a tremendous amount to watch and enjoy. I live in Tucson, AZ and we have a very active Southern Arizonans 4 Nebraska. I write a sports e-mail for the members, like over 200, In the football season its twice a week and during the remaining part its once a week.
Here is my article of a couple of weeks ago about the women's team. There is a vitality that exists in these women sports that is lacking in mens. AND I LOVE IT. Being from Lincoln, I just wish that I could live there to see the Volleyball and Basketball of these female athletes. They are what college sports are all about.
1-0/5-0/10-0/15-0/17-0/19-0/21-0
Nebraska Women’s Basketball
And that is where we stand today, Husker Fans, 21-0. Who would have thought that our women’s basketball team that was picked to finish 6th in the Big XII would now be leading the Conference by 3 whole games. 8-0 in the league with OK State and the Sooners tied for second at 6-3. Who would have thought they would now be ranked fourth in the nation and one of only two teams undefeated half way through the season.
Now lets don’t count our chickens before they hatch, but this is a clear shot at the best finish in Big XII play, a winning streak record that could sit around here for a number of years, and the highest national ranking ever attained.
Coach Connie Yori’s first year at Nebraska was the low point of women’s basketball history with an 8-20 record. But her first recruiting class made a difference and in 2003-04, her second year, the team went 18-12 and the rest, well history is still to be written.
Last year wasn’t that great either but then two major players were out with injuries. This year we have a well seasoned team with three senior starters, a junior, and an outstanding freshman ball handler, and so far very healthy. But there is something a little different about this team. All through the game they smile at each other.
Yea, that’s right they love playing together, they are having fun and, surprise, they love to practice and get better. It’s the effort they exert these two or three days between games that is fun for them. If you want an example just go to Husker.com and look at the lead picture of the girls win over Texas A&M. There is Corey, Yvonne and Dominique celebrating together. Not only that, but in a number of the huddles during the A&M game, there was the Coach with her big smile too.
There is another common feeling among the 15 players, they don’t care who scores, just that the team is scoring. Proof of this is the number of assists compared to opponents. So far they have logged in 314 assists compared to opponents 197. Now this requires that each player has the ability to see the whole field, who is breaking loose and pass the ball and also a good tight defense.
Each of the starters is averaging double figures in scoring, except freshman Lindsey Moore who is only at 4.6 points, but she has accounted for 97 assists, more than double any other player. That’s her job.
Another big thing about this team is they don’t allow many points from the line. Nebraska is a hard charging team and they get fouled. They average 16.4 points a game compared to opponents 9.3. Now that means a lot when you are shooting to complete a 3 point play or two shots when you didn’t score the basket and you haven’t committed enough fouls to let the other team get to the foul line.
Yes we have scored a lot of points from the inside, but how about from down town, outside the circle. To date the gals have rang the 3 point bell 157 times while the opponents have only scored 69. Now that is a difference of 264 points or just over twelve a game. Yvonne Turner has accounted for 60 of them, but there are plenty of others capable of banging that 3 point bell. Corey Montgomery has 23, but also a ton of jumps from around 15 feet. Then there is Dominique Kelley (15), Nicole Neals (14), Kala Kuhlmann (13), and then ball hawk Lindsey Moore with 10 that accounts for about 1/3 of her total points. Now three of those names are not starters, but that just shows the depth of this team.
Another factor for the big difference of 3 pointers between the Huskers and the opponents is the style of defense Coach Yori has introduced. They are dogged, but under control and don’t commit errors. Take for instance Cathryn Redwood averaging only 16.4 minutes per game but in that limited time has accounted for a team leading 46 blocks. Now if you would project that to a full 40 minutes playing time, it would mean she is denying just over ten shots a game.
You remember the old days, and soon to be the new days of Cornhusker Football? You know when we dominated the games?. Well there is this certain characteristic of the Lady Huskers, but in just a different light. The football teams often was slow in scoring but still ended hanging up the numbers.
Coach Connie Yori’s team is a fast starting, dynamic team that takes off from the toss up until the final horn rings the end. If you haven’t seen them play, well check your TV schedule FSAZ which covers a lot of Big XII games men and women. Or tune into Husker.com for an audio and maybe even a free game on your PC, or watch limited replays. Another place to catch them on ESPN360. The rest of this season, I do believe we will see more on ESPAZ or ESPN360.
Excuse me for dominating this issue of Husker Huddle with nothing but chat about our Women’s Basketball Team. But this team has caught my attention from about the time they put aside LSU, ranked 5th at the time. Yes, we have played a number of top 25 teams, but that’s because this is the Big XII, where every win is a real battle.
I
once heard that the reason women’s basketball isn’t a fan builder is because the men play above the rim and the women play below the rim. Well, to me there is one thing that differs these two games. Our women show their enjoyment of playing the game and playing with each other and it is so much fun to see that team adherence to the thrill of the game in every second.
Darn, I wish I was living back in Lincoln this winter, despite the snow and able to go to these home games.
Go Big Red
