Going independent would be tough for Texas.
Remember that even with the conference networks, the biggest games are
shown nationally or regionally as part of network agreements and are not
on the conference network. It is my understanding that the conference
network shows mostly minor sports, games not picked up on the network
agreements, talk shows, and reruns. The conference network gets bundled
in lower-cost tiers locally and regionally, but are in higher-priced
tiers or unavailable elsewhere.
So, there are two questions:
1) Would a network pay much to broadcast Texas games regionally and
nationally? Even with Notre Dame, the contract for NBC is rumored to
be a money loser. How much would a network pay to show only Texas games
regionally and nationally?
2) How many cable networks outside Texas would carry the Texas network
of minor sports, etc.?
A conference offers a bigger viewing area, more games for with possible
national and regional interest, more tradition, more interest, etc.
All of that is more attractive to a television network partner than a
single team. In many ways a somewhat weaker conference that allows
Texas to garner a larger share of revenue is still a great situation
for Texas. And, if they could control a conference network the way
they seem to control other aspects of arrangements (with a bigger share
of the pie), even participation in a conference network would make
sense. The question there would be whether Texas could get a share of
the conference network revenue commensurate with what they perceive is
their value to the conference.
All of this goes back to when Nebraska and other schools broke with
the NCAA on football broadcasts and hinges on the question of how
much share goes to the schools with the strongest programs that
appear most on television and generate the greatest number of viewers
and how much is shared with other institutions. When this movement
towards less sharing began, Nebraska wanted a bigger share so perhaps
NU fans shouldn't be thinking Texas' actions are so much different.
