The chess player in me wonders if there could be an endgame in progress 
here.  

It will take a couple of years for the realignment to effect schedules,
which is probably the point at which conference media payments will kick in.

In the mean time, I think it is possible Big XII conference rules stipulate
that the schools that LEAVE will forfeit their Big XII media payments, 
possibly starting immediately.  

However, if the conference votes to disband, then that clause probably
becomes moot.

So, the schools that don't leave RIGHT AWAY may be hoping for a payday
in the short run from the schools that leave before the conference folds , 
especially those (like Texas and Oklahoma) that won't have much trouble 
finding new homes.
