[Husker] Chicago Tribune says Nebraska will join the Big Ten

Supposedly it works like this:

Big Ten -- Nebraska, if we were to invite you to apply to join the Big 10 would you be interested in applying?

Nebraska -- That sounds very interesting, if we apply would your member institutions be willing to accept our application?

Big Ten -- We have discussed this and would be very interested in having you as a part of our family. We would, however, need to work out various details.

Nebraska -- Well if you did accept us what do you think some of those details would look like? etc.

Remember TO's infamous e-mail to Perlman after Tressel was at the coaches' clinic. "We need to talk about what is happening with the various conferences expanding. Notice Delaney didn't call Osborne or Perlman and say we are interested in you. I believe Tressel was the chosen emissary to gauge Nebraska's interest and give the Big Ten plausible denial that they had not been in contact with Nebraska. After all, it is two friends speculating about possibilities and the current state of affairs.

Notice also Osborne's understated e-mail. He didn't e-mail Perlman and say, "Guess what? The Big Ten is really interested in us!! Let's talk about this." The whole negotiating style by both Osborne and Perlman has been very classy and business like. This is in contrast to one of our sister institution's behavior.

By the way, I got an e-mail from a friend who had contact with someone who knows about the process. He was told that when the Big 10 began its investigations into which programs in the country would be most desirable to add (based on athlethics, academics, traditon, and financial viability) Nebraska was a very strong third choice. Obviously they were most interested in Notre Dame and then the TV eyes of Texas.
