No doubt. The old-timers on the list will recall that Bill Jennings
coached NU to a 3-6-1 record in 1961 (one of his better years in
Lincoln). The next year, the Huskers went 9-2 under Bob Devaney, with
essentially the same talent, thus starting one of the longest eras of
sustained greatness in the history of college football.
Bum Phillips once praised Don Shula as follows: "He can beat yourn with
hizzen, and he can beat hizzen with yourn." Some coaches can get their
teams to play above the level of their individual abilities; most can't.
As a head coach, Callahan was in the latter category.
