Good post Jeff. Seems to remind me of 2001, when Jamaal Lord sat on the
bench when NU had games out of reach and Crouch played over half of the 4th
quarter. Some quality snaps for Lord that season would very likely have
made a bit of a difference in the 7-7 season that convinced Pederson to fire
Solich.
That said, Gilbert gained experience in that game that will be very good
for him come October 16th. I still think Nebraska wins this time though.
GO BIG RED!!!

While having a senior quarterback go down is a big blow to a championship
team, I think a good portion of the large falloff from McCoy to Gilbert has
to do with UT coaching decisions throughout the year.
The Texas coaching staff was more interested in padding McCoy's numbers
for the Heisman voters and winning with style points for the polls. If
Gilbert had been given more quality minutes throughout the year, he would have
been better prepared for the Alabama game.
In a season where 7 of UT's games were decided by 30+ points, there were
plenty of opportunities to season the young backup with significant playing
time. Gilbert had only 26 passing attempts spread over action in 8 games
prior to the Championship game. He nearly doubled this total in the Alabama
game (40 attempts).
