While having a senior quarterback go down is a big blow to a championship team, I think a good portion of the large falloff from McCoy to Gilbert has to do with UT coaching decisions throughout the year.
The Texas coaching staff was more interested in padding McCoy's numbers for the Heisman voters and winning with style points for the polls. If Gilbert had been given more quality minutes throughout the year, he would have been better prepared for the Alabama game.
In a season where 7 of UT's games were decided by 30+ points, there were plenty of opportunities to season the young backup with significant playing time. Gilbert had only 26 passing attempts spread over action in 8 games prior to the Championship game. He nearly doubled this total in the Alabama game (40 attempts).
