Even the Big 12 Championship has difficulty selling out.  At least it
is my experience that tickets are available at less than face value
prior to the event.  The main issues are that the participants may not
be known more than a week or two in advance and that it is held at a
venue that may be distant from the home base of both teams (i.e., not a
one day travel option).

Make the timing tighter and the distances greater and then multiply
it by two or three weeks in a row and selling tickets would be an
issue.  That said, most athletic events nowdays are for television
and not inperson viewing.
