In your scenario, the 10-2 SEC team wins he national championship.  They won the tournament.  The Big 12 team didn't get screwed, they lost.  Lower seeds beat higher seeds all the time.  Win and advance, lose and go home.  The Big 12 team had a great year, made the tournament, but didn't win it.  In my earlier example, Gerogetown did not win the NC because they lost in the tournament to a team they had already beaten 3 times.  They didn't get screwed, they lost.  The winner is the champion.  That is what a championship tournament is.  You would rather name a champion based on an election.  If that's your preference, that's ok.
