I've waited to breach this discussion, but I just heard some news that makes
me want to jump in.
My main argument AGAINST a playoff is that it would diminish the
importance/excitement of the regular season because it would make it easier
to make the NC game.
With the way it is now, you have to be perfect and you have to play good
competition. It's the only format where a game vs Akron can make or break
your season.
OK, so why post now? Well, I heard the rumor that the NCAA has approved
expanding the basketball tournament teams to 96. NINETY-SIX! The basketball
regular season was a joke to begin with and it will be worse now. The major
conferences are going to pull in 10 or so teams now. I don't care how good
the Big XII is this year, they shouldn't have 10 teams in the tournament.
How does this relate to football? Well, you know that from pressure over
time they will constantly expand the field to include more and more teams.
It would also cause the major teams to make their preseason schedules even
more pathetic. Why would they schedule a home and home vs a decent opponent
when they can schedule a weak team, get an easy win and a sellout and it
wouldn't cost them any shot at the NC.
If there were some way to guarantee that the field would never exceed 4 or 8
teams, then sure. However, the NCAA can and WILL expand the field way
beyond what they should. Since the NCAA can't be trusted with the tourney,
we shouldn't have one.
And for those who said that the other bowls could still exist with a
tournament, don't kid yourselves. The playoffs would become the only focus
and extra bowls would go away.
