Since the theme of this thread is internet rumors are *true,* I'd say
that Scott (who I do NOT know in any way) used the Internet listserver
dictionary meaning of the word "knew."  I looked it up.

[past tense of verb know] (noo) Not to be confused with a form of
African Wildebeest - synonym for "making stuff up" or the more popular
"making sh_t up." "A public acknowledgement concerning the possession
of high-level personal information about some matters based on nothing
other than the belief that one knows about stuff they actually know
very little about."  As used in the sentence:  "I knew the brother of
the cousin of Bob Davies' cable installer who was doing his new house
in Lincoln last week."
