I also am disappointed in the results of the CCG game. I think we have
seen more than one game during the last two years where turnovers seem
to multiple as the game proceeds. I expect that once a fumble occurs
the players start worrying about fumbling and for some reason that
helps create more fumbles. I seem to recall some of the running backs
during the early Osborne years had the same thing happen.
In order for me to put some perspective on the game and the season, I
need to remember the following.
season W-L record
2004...5-6 No Bowl
2005...8-4 No CCG-Bowl Win
2006...9-5 CCG-lost, Bowl-Lost
2007...5-7 No CCG, No Bowl
2008...9-4 No CCG Bowl Win
2009...10-4 CCG-lost, Bowl-win
2010...10-3 CCG-lost, Bowl game not played yet
After looking at the above records I think our coaches are moving the
team in the right direction! 2004-2007 we had a record of 27-22 with on
CCG game and two bowl games with a 1-1 record. from 2008-2010 we have a
29-11 record with 2 CCG games and 3 bowl games and a 2-0 record in
bowls. Sometime I need to look from where we came!
The other observation is in the recruiting. There has been much made in
different circles abou tthe recruiting at Nebraska. I have never been a
strong follower of the star ratings of high school players. It appears
to me that players go from a 2-star/3-star rating to 4-star/5-star based
on which schools show interest. If Texas, Notre Dame, USC, Florida and
maybe a couple of others show interest the player gets a big bump in his
star value. It also becomes apparent that something smells with the
system when you view the success of some of those same programs on the
field. I would take our players and coaching staff over the staff and
players at Texas hands down. Notre Dame consistently has a highly
touted recruiting class but doesn't seem to translate that to success on
the field. I trust that our coaches know which players fit the system
best and try to recruit those types of players. From my observations of
the records it sure looks to me like they know better than I what they
are doing.
