We are fortunate that our athletic department runs in the black. If it didn't wouldn't we be looking at getting rid of more sports and reducing the chances for kids to get some kind of scholarship or at least a chance to participate in their non-revenue sport? I mean we no longer have male cheerleaders (OK not the best example), mens swimming and gymnastics. I know that gender parity was the driver for that but hey we get to save money by getting rid of sports that don't pay for themselves as well.
I really don't know how you justify raising tuition in these times if that raise goes to support athletics even to a small degree and that happens at the majority of colleges that don't make money with their athletic programs.
Oh and by the way - sounds like there will be more research money on the academic front as well - not that actual learning is all that important !??!
