[Husker] Big Ten Expansion

"Free" isn't terribly accurate. The Big Ten Network is included on some packages from cable and satellite providers. On DirecTV, I believe it's in one of the lower priced packages. But many cable companies carry it in a digital (additional cost) tier. In most cases, the annual cost of these additional packages probably is less than five or six pay per view broadcasts, and you get the benefit of those additional channels ... plus other sports (baseball, basketball, etc.)

Last time I checked, the Big Ten was charging cable companies $7 or $8 a year per subscriber to carry the Big Ten Network. I think the charge varied as to whether you were in Big Ten territory or not. (I thought I heard that a cable system in California was charged less than one in Chicago, for example...)

It's not free...but you may already be paying for it anyway...

The only, and I mean ONLY reason I would be in favor of this is because
I would likely see all the Huskers games without ponying up the PPV
dollars (the Big 10 network is free and most of the conference games are
on ESPN or ESPN2 as well).

Selfish on my part.

SI's Stewart Mandel speculates (and he makes it clear that he has no
inside information) that the Big Ten will go after Nebraska as its
"crown jewel" of expansion.

Someone calling himself "Frank the Tank" reaches essentially the same
conclusion by means of analysis too complex for my feeble brain to
follow.

FWIW.
