Hey, Scott!!
There is no such rule!! Oh, am I too late??
But what I wanted to comment on is the rule itself. It has been
explained to me and I understand what the rule says, but for the same
reasons as others on this list, it tends to make an exception for a
near reception in the endzone. I also understand that they made the
change to the NCAA rule in 2007 to make it conform to the NFL rule.
Great. There's so much consistency between those two organizations
already. Why, the ball is pretty much the same shape, and um....um...
well, I'm sure there are others.
The point made above by Skyler and Scott is a valid one. The nose of
a football crosses the goal line and regardless of what happens to it
next, its a touchdown. A ball that is caught inbounds in the endzone
must be held until the catch is carried to the ground and beyond to be
a touchdown. Regardless of whether the player had control of the
ball, or whether the ground caused the ball to be dropped. Clearly,
with instant replay in HiDef these days, one can determine if the ball
was in control at the point of contact with the ground, you would
think.
Well, I agree the call was correct. I disagree with the rule. I also
question why the coaches didn't ask whether the call would be
reviewed, since all plays are reviewed these days.
And all of this talk minus a functioning time machine will result in
nothing (mine's in the shop this week). But I feel better. And this
is the best the list has been since probably the TTech game last year.
Way to go!!
Nick
