What I was trying to point out regarding comparisons with the 1996 ASU
game was that Nebraska's first road game was that an inexperienced
offense was on the road against a veteran QB. I too was at the 1996 game,
I just had to drive about 100 miles from Tucson. It was a shock after
watching the Huskers win the 1996 Fiesta Bowl and Coach Osborne's second
national championship about eight months earlier.
We are forgetting that last year Tyrod Taylor averaged 5.8 yards per
carry, so he may have been a threat to run.
While I do agree that Matt O'Hanlon broke coverage, but as I pointed out
in my previous post this happened at the 1996 ASU game as well. And I
cannot lay the blame for the loss on his shoulders. Matt O'Hanlon had a
great recovery for the tackle. He could have given up on the play but
didn't. The speaks volumes for his hustle and heart, and will work for
him well down the road.
Gosh, you'd think that Nebraska just lost the conference or national
championship. This was only the third game of season and Nebraska's first
road game. As I posted previously, this game will serve Nebraska well
down the road.
As for punting instead of the attempting a 50+ yard field goal or
punting with 2:00 minute to go in the game, Coach Pelini looks like he
did a lot of Coach Osborne did on the road - play field position. The
defense was playing well at that time, so it was the right call to make.
I cannot remember how many times both Coach Solich or Coach Callahan
would go for it on fourth down, just to get stopped and shift momentum to
the other team. So, I cannot fault the coaching staff on either of those
calls.
I do take exception with all the passing when it is first and goal on the
six yard line. This is Nebraska football, and Roy Helu was having decent
success running right at the defense. Nebraska should have run right at
them on first down, then maybe an option or play action or fade on second
down, then a fade route on third, and finally kicked the field goal on
fourth. Granted all the penalties hurt, but Nebraska should have run it
on first down.
As for Roy Helu not having success getting to the perimeter, Va Tech had
a lot of speed on defense. A lot more than Nebraska had seen so far this
year. Running right at them was successful. It will also cause the
secondary to crowd the box and will open up play action deep.
However, the bottom line is that I do not coach at Nebraska, nor am I a
football player there. I am a fan, and as I fan I will support the team
come hell or high water. I will 'mourn' the losses and cheer the wins,
but I will always support the Huskers!
Go Big Red!
