[Husker] The VaTech game was a lot like the 1996 ASU game

Well then I stand corrected, Mark. Not only do I not know what the player was thinking, I also do not know what defense they were in.

NU was in cover 2 on that play, meaning safeties play deep and split
the field in halves. If your opponent send two deep receivers, Cover 2
should work, on paper. Cover 2 also assumes you get a QB pressure or
sack before the receiver routes all develop deep. On that play, NU was
"containing" Taylor more than rushing him, so the receivers had the
time to exploit the structural holes in our deep coverage.

Problem is, once Taylor started scrambling, all 4 of VTs receivers
went deep. No way O'Hanlon could cover them all, or even his half.
There was a deep threat down the middle too, and O'Hanlon was stuck,
knowing whichever one he covered, the other was going to go free. NU
should have been asking the CB's to take the WR's deep along the
sidelines, not curling in to cover the short routes.

I give O'Hanlon tremendous credit for preventing a touchdown. There
was little else he could have done .. he was not put in a position to
succeed.

When a defense knows the game has come down to a point where the offense needs a huge play players have to absolutely sure of their responsibilities or what happened Saturday can happen- the safety in that situation is above ALL else not to let anyone get behind him, and I am almost willing to bet the coaching staff was screaming that on the sidelines (or should have been). Looking at the tape it does not appear he slipped or had any sort of physical issue on the play so that is why I would call it a gross mental lapse.

We will all never know for sure, but I am fairly confident the coaching staff will address (or has already addressed) the responsibilities for that scenario and that the player knows what he did wrong on the play. I am over it, and hopefully he is too as he is too valuable a player this year to let this bother him into the remainder of the season.

It caused the score to shift which resulted in our loss --- BUT, allowing the runback on the initial kickoff, not getting into the endzone and settling for 5 field goals, not getting a first down to keep the ball out of VT's hands at the end of the game, they all contributed to our loss --- and many included mental errors ------- including ones by the coaches!
