I'll have to stand by my post of a few days ago. Zac is a game manager, not a playmaker. Here is a quote from SW after the game yesterday:
“He managed a great game, guys, I'm telling you,'' Watson said. “He was perfect, as far as getting us in the right plays and doing the things we asked him to do in this game plan.''
Perfect is a stretch, but Zac wasn't the problem for most of the game. He can throw screens and short passes with the best of them. He will occasionally hit a receiver downfield, more often not, and even better find a wide open receiver running deep (4Q Missouri game). Key words being "wide open". Zac is an average runner with average speed. He has average arm strength. But Zac got the ball back twice, with 4 minutes left and with 1:30 or so left. All he needed was a field goal and he has a kicker who is a complete freak with a leg for days. He doesn't even need to get close. But now he can't manage the game, he has to make plays, and he can't. He threw two interceptions. (And yes, the one to Gilleylen was on Zac...when you throw high and behind that is what often happens.) Same against Texas Tech, we were way behind but he got the ball back near the end of the third quarter and took about 7 minutes to get down the field. The
boos at the end of the game were for the short passes. Everyone was sick of them. That Tech game, Zac either couldn't or wouldn't throw downfield. It's just not his game. Same against ISU. Same against Virginia Tech.Against Missouri, the defense saved that game. Lee could never have brought the team down the length of the field.
I am not a hater, but what you see with Zac is all there is and this is all he will ever be. He can't make plays with his arm and can't make plays with his legs. He is a posession guy. If there were playmakers around him, fine, a game manager is all you need. But there aren't.
In 2007, SW was the OC when we stuck with a mediocre QB game after game while a better QB sat on the bench. It took an injury to Keller to finally give Joe Ganz his chance and he showed it right away (which BC shamefully tried to put up as a testament to his coaching.)
I'm not saying Cody is a great playmaker, I'm not saying he is better for the team than Zac. I don't know, neither do you, neither does Shawn. He was wrong about Keller over Ganz, he may be wrong now. We all don't know. Shouldn't we find out?
