[Husker] Rietsch's Ramblings or Dons Downers

Don Rietsch drr at livgenmi.com

NOTE: THE FOLLOWING WORDY RAMBLINGS DO NOT NECESSARILY REFLECT THE OPINIONS
OF THE ENTIRE RIETSCH HOUSEHOLD

Rich in NV is thinking exactly what I am. "Something is rotten in Denmark".
I sense, and I pray I'm wrong, that there is something very wrong between
the offensive players and the defensive focused head coach that goes much
deeper than the X's and O's.

This offense is on a downward spiral and the coaches don't seem to know how
to stop it. The buck has to stop with the head coach. As for Watson, you
don't go from a genius to a goat in one year.

I see our problems on O as follows: The probable starting QB transferred, a
starting RB got kicked off the team, NP, the best RB on the team, is trying
to play receiver, Gilleylen doesn't have the hands to play receiver but with
his speed could be a fine DB, NU has only one true receiver, McNeil, that
has played to date, etc. In summary, I see receivers who don't have great
hands trying to catch balls that are thrown a little off target. If the
balls were delivered on target these guys would catch most of them. On the
other hand, if they all had great hands like McNeil, they would catch most
of the slightly off target balls.

Now the fumbles: Helu is not a fumbler; he has a shoulder stinger (the MU
game clearly showed he got injured) which means he has little strength in
that arm (I can attest to this personally) and should not have been playing.
Robinson played well and I don't fault him for his fumble. ISU must have
had half their team trying to tear the ball out of his hands. His forward
progress was stopped and there should have been a whistle. The NP fumble was
no excuses as was Holt's and Lee's.

One of the other posters wrote that great offensive coaches and great
defensive coaches don't always make great head coaches. Buddy Ryan was a
great defensive coach but the guys on O hated his guts. Pelini is a great
defensive coach and may turn out to be a great head coach. I'm willing to
give him 4 years to prove it. Callahan's biggest mistake was his
dismantling of NU's heritage. His biggest fault was his ego. If he had
embraced our heritage and brought in a Pelini type defensive coordinator, he
would still be our coach.

UGHHH THIS ONE REALLY HURT!!!

There is something deeper going on with the offensive players... Lack of a
true natural leader among the team..
Wonder if BO has "lost" these guys, I sure hope that is not the case..

Ugh

Rich in Northern Virginia!!

I must agree with most of your post. 8 TOs and lose by 2. There is some
light though, I took my grandson to his first Husker game and we had a good
time.

Whatever all you rose colored glasses wearing idiots on this list want to
say now, this is without a doubt THE WORST LOSS I can ever remember as a
Nebraska fan, and that includes the Texas Tech disaster in Lubbock a few
years back. This team should have won this game 49-7 and instead just saw
the season come to an abrupt end (and at home no less) to a team that was
missing its best defensive player, its starting QB AND the leading RB in the
conference and hadn't won in Lincoln since 1977 AT HOME.

If I were the coach of this pathetic offense I would take every one of the
idiots who fumbled the ball out and play 17 year old freshmen over them
regardless of the outcome.

Until today I thought the worst loss I had seen was the Penn State game
(40-6?) but this is worse. I cannot WAIT to read people on this list trying
to sugar coat this loss.

I know execution has been ridiculous the last 2 weeks, but if yiou really
watch the game closely you will notice that Shawn Watson is on another
planet right now, and I really think he is looking ahead to his appointment
as the Colorado head coach in about 3 months when Hawkins get booted. When
will Watson realize the WR screen (which happens to be a lateral, and you
all saw how that worked so nicely last week) DOES NOT WORK WITH PLAYERS WHO
DON'T PROTECT THE FOOTBALL? 8 turnovers? Give me a freaking break. Take all
these scrubs out and play players who understand what it means to protect
the football.

And Roy Helu if you are reading this (like so many on here believe you have
the time and desire to do so) did you forget how to hold a football? You
should be sitting the rest of the year.

I have not been a Helu supporter at all this season. I just don't see it.
It's time to turn the offense over to the younger kids. Sure miss Burkhead.
I wish Bo would take more control over the offense. We need the killer
instinct driven into that side of the team.

Two weeks ago, NU was on top of the world. By golly, we were back after the
Missouri game! Looking at 11-1, worst 10-2 with a trip to meet Texas in the
Big 12 Championship. Now two weeks later, we can't score because the
offense can't hold onto the ball and the defense can't generate much in the
way of turnovers to help out (not a knock on the defense, they are playing
superior football other than the turnover thing). Coaching may have cost us
in the TT game but certainly not today, this loss was pretty much on the
offense. Now all those games that seemed walkover wins before seem to have
flipped to at best even up with a final 7-5 record a very real likelihood,
maybe as low as 6-6, worse if the players let this get in their heads and
stay there. Can this team get its combined psyche together enough to get
rid of the fumble phobia and perform at a level expected of NU football?
Will Cody Green get the chance to show what he can do? Will NU find
new ways not to score inside the 10 yard line? (That one scares me the
most, I would like to think there aren't any more ways to blow scoring
chances that close to the goal line) Guess we'll know over the next six
weeks or so.

Bright spots? All American performance by Suh. Defense played very well
despite one slip on the long pass. No killer penalties on the offense
today. Other than that, not a pretty day.

I must admit I agree. I wasn't one of the ones calling for a change at
QB this week, but I believe it would be right for next week. I don't
think anybody who turned over the ball this week should start next week.

When was the last time (if ever) that NU had more turnovers than points
without getting shut out? The collapse of the offense now rivals what
the defense did in 2007.

Do you think Watson is on bubble of being fired if he doesn't get or
apply for a head coaching job ?

I am not sure I hold the D fully responsible for the long pass. They
had them 3 and out then the special teams didn't play heads up.

Subject: [Husker] Well, Let's See

Two weeks ago, NU was on top of the world. By golly, we were back after
the Missouri game! Looking at 11-1, worst 10-2 with a trip to meet
Texas in the Big 12 Championship. Now two weeks later, we can't score
because the offense can't hold onto the ball and the defense can't
generate much in the way of turnovers to help out (not a knock on the
defense, they are playing superior football other than the turnover
thing). Coaching may have cost us in the TT game but certainly not
today, this loss was pretty much on the offense. Now all those games
that seemed walkover wins before seem to have flipped to at best even up
with a final 7-5 record a very real likelihood, maybe as low as 6-6,
worse if the players let this get in their heads and stay there. Can
this team get its combined psyche together enough to get rid of the
fumble phobia and perform at a level expected of NU football? Will Cody
Green get the chance to show what he can do? Will NU find
new ways not to score inside the 10 yard line? (That one scares me the
most, I would like to think there aren't any more ways to blow scoring
chances that close to the goal line) Guess we'll know over the next six
weeks or so.

Bright spots? All American performance by Suh. Defense played very
well despite one slip on the long pass. No killer penalties on the
offense today. Other than that, not a pretty day.

I would think so, but I've given up trying to guess what's going to happen.
I was sure we'd see Cody if we had fewer than 14 at the half. Nothing.

Do you think Watson is on bubble of being fired if he doesn't get or
apply for a head coaching job ?

It's time to turn the offense over to the younger kids. Sure miss Burkhead.
I wish Bo would take more control over the offense. We need the killer
instinct driven into that side of the team.

years back. This team should have won this game 49-7 and instead just saw
the season come to an abrupt end (and at home no less) to a team that was
missing its best defensive player, its starting QB AND the leading RB in the
conference and hadn't won in Lincoln since 1977 AT HOME.

will Watson realize the WR screen (which happens to be a lateral, and you
all saw how that worked so nicely last week) DOES NOT WORK WITH PLAYERS WHO
DON'T PROTECT THE FOOTBALL? 8 turnovers? Give me a freaking break. Take all
these scrubs out and play players who understand what it means to protect
the football.

Well that is a good idea except we would lose one quarterback and
half the receivers! My great aunt Sara would rate as a great QB if
someone - anyone would just catch AND HOLD ON TO the ball.

Just got back from the game and am in unreasonable rant mode : (
