That's pretty much what auto dealers/manufacturers do  too....sometimes to 
get one item you have to order an entire package with other  things you 
don't want.
 
We  subbed to Direct Tv eleven years ago for two reasons: 1. Cable rates 
were  increasing about 10% a year, about 3 times the cost of living increases; 
and 2,  to have more access to the Husker games. My basic rates for 
satellite  have not increased as fast as the Time Warner rates.
 
For  my 10th anniversary (for being a loyal customer) Direct Tv game me  
Showtime  free for 3 months, and (for taking the time to thank them) a  
portable DVD player with all the attachments; for my 11th  anniversary they gave 
me the Sports Package for 6 months (right during  football season too).
