Ditto on thinking Jon is right.  "The Wildcat" I think is more than just a formation, it's a scheme or package or whatever you want to call it.  It does generally involve a direct snap to a back other than the quarterback and like Jon I'm pretty sure it always involves the same motion across the formation at the snap and every play starts the same.  Also it uses an unbalanced line to one side or the other.  I've heard a lot of the commentators say it is a variation of the single wing but that is beyond me.  Lots of folks say it's been used a lot in college for years, only the Wildcat name is new.  I think Kansas State claims that it is named after them because the current version started there with Michael Bishop.

FWIW, they still refer to what Miami runs as the wildcat when Pat White is
in there. I think Jon is right: it's the motion.
