Various posters have speculated that ESPN has favorites (e.g., Tebow),
but with respect to this online poll (sponsored by a Japanese company
that makes automobiles), if ESPN would have an interest one way or
another, it might be that they want the most hits and votes. That'd
be in the sponsors interest and ESPN wants satisfied sponsors. More
hits and votes would be generated by a close vote. If, as happened
early, Suh ran away with the voting, it would suppress the total number
of votes. Shortly, after Suh built up a large lead, he disappeared
from the ballot (based on voting by ESPN experts). On the other hand,
with voting coming to the close, his addition to the ballot will
surely boost the number of hits and votes --- not only his but those
of the other contenders. On the other hand, maybe the timing of
his disapperance and reappearance happened just what ESPN claims ---
the experts voted for him, then didn't, then did.
Since yesterday, Suh as cut the Spiller's lead from more than 15K
to less than 5K. It appears that Suh may overtake Spiller by
tomorrow.
For those who claim there has been robot voting, it is my understanding
that ESPN examines the IP address to block such voting. If robot
voting were much of a factor, there would be far more than 100K votes
for each candidate. It's much easier to believe that thousands of
individual Husker fans have voted in the past two days.
