In the entire history of the Heisman trophy, only 1 defensive player won the
award...Charles Woodson...and he is listed as DB/WR. Of course, many of the
early award winners played offense and defense.

The Heisman is awarded to "The most outstanding college football player" of
that year. That is the complete and only defined criteria for the award. It
is left to every voter how they personally interpret that and who then would
be their choice.

The Heisman Trophy is a joke. Why anyone would even care about who wins it
anymore I do not understand. If I am correct, and I do know I will be
corrected by members on this list if I am not, it was meant to be awarded to
the best all around college football in the nation. How far have we strayed
from that concept? I live in Pinole Ca home of GinoTorretta who won the
award playing QB for Miami. I have known Gino since he was a child and like
him but I do not believe he deserved the trophy. Miami had a great season
until they ran into Alabama in the Bowl game.Had that been a regular season
game Gino's performance in that game would have knocked him out of
contention. So much for my thoughts which with them and 2 bucks you probably
can get a cup of coffee.
