Floyd...the example you give of Torretta is a good one. He won the Heisman, but he not only wasnt the best player in the country, he wasn't even the best player at his position (qb) in the country, nor was he even the best player on his own team ...the Hurricanes. Yet he won the award as "the most outstanding collegiate football player". So, does the "most outstanding" mean the "best"? Doesn't seem so. It's a weird award, but no more weird (weirder?) than choosing a champion by means of an election (poll) rather than having the teams play each other in a tournament.

The Heisman Trophy is a joke. Why anyone would even care about who wins it anymore I do not understand. If I am correct, and I do know I will be corrected by members on this list if I am not, it was meant to be awarded to the best all around college football in the nation. How far have we strayed from that concept? I live in Pinole Ca home of GinoTorretta who won the award playing QB for Miami. I have known Gino since he was a child and like him but I do not believe he deserved the trophy. Miami had a great season until they ran into Alabama in the Bowl game.Had that been a regular season game Gino's performance in that game would have knocked him out of contention. So much for my thoughts which with them and 2 bucks you probably can get a cup of coffee.
