Actually, I don't find it at all surprising. When I listen to the
various noises passing themselves off as sports experts on radio and
TV, I hear the same thing over and over again. You have to be the one
person on your team that is most responsible for your team's
performance. The player that means the most. And certainly that
can't be a defensive player cuz they don't score (often enough). And
it really, really, really helps if your team is in the top 10 of BCS
schools, because the best player in college football can't play on a
mediocre team. Can't happen.
I don't particularly subscribe to that way of thinking, but I don't
get a vote. Its not supposed to be an award for the best football
player in college, who also plays on a winning team (championship team
if possible) from a major conference, who plays at quarterback or
running back, and is likely to be an outstanding pro player. But
that's what its become.
Don't get me wrong. The Heisman award winners are truly outstanding
players. Are they the best in college football? Hard to say. They
are the best of the limited pool that they are selected from.
