The penalty situation is never a good thing. However, I don't know all
the details of any of the penalties. I did not have an opportunity to
watch most of the game but I do know that sometimes penalties are not
what they seem to be, and for sure not what some talking head on TV says
they are. For example, when lineman is held in his 3-point stance for
a prolonged period while the play is being changed (sometimes apparently
several times), it is prone to lead to movement on the line. I have
been advised (by people that I feel are more competent than the talking
heads) that the chop block was bogus. I have heard several points on
the Asante penalty that hold it in a different light than the talking
heads and some of the posters on here. I recall the face masking of
Crouch that was missed. It seems the officials that day were the only
ones that didn't see it. From time to time the view of the official is
not exactly what happened on the field. I'm not saying that every call
should go to the replay booth (I'm a bit annoyed by the use of the
replay anyway, since it rarely does anything except extend the length of
the game), but I also know there are some calls that are not reviewable
and that are not accurate.
IMHO, the fans are making attempts to be the "see all do all" ultimate
coach that makes decisions based on our perception of what happens on
the field, in the locker room and from replays that also don't tell the
whole story. I trust that the coaching staff and the AD will focus on
the issues that need to be addressed to improve the play on the field.
We fans, it seems to me, need to focus on watching the game and
supporting our team. GO BIG RED!!!!!
