[Husker] Colorado was Re:Thoughts

I disagree on both points due to one fundamental problem at Colorado. The Buffaloes simply do not have the resources to compete in the Big XII conference. It's the culture in Boulder and the finances. Shawn Watson has "been there, done that"...and simply won't be interested in that head coaching job.

At Colorado, the fickle CU fan only shows up for "big games". That causes the athletic department to "upschedule" an incredibly strong non-conference schedule. Perhaps better labeled an impossibly strong non-conference schedule. We know how weak next season's NU schedule is. The previous administration signed up Western Kentucky, Idaho, South Dakota State, and a road game at Washington for the Huskers. The Buffs play Colorado State (in Denver), Cal (at Berkeley), Hawaii, and Georgia. Two SEC teams, an in-state rival, and a team that played in a BCS bowl two years ago.

This year, Colorado had to offer $10 tickets to sell-out the Wyoming game, and offered two-for-one specials last weekend against Texas A&M.

Colorado's athletic department is deep in debt, still owing money they borrowed to buy out Gary Barnett. They really can't afford to buy out Dan Hawkins, and furthermore, they can't afford to hire anybody to replace him. Then, add in the fact that under state law, Colorado can only hire assistant coaches on a annual basis as the school is limited to only 6 multi-year contracts total.

Colorado is a dysfunctional athletic department that is going to take fundamental change to reverse course to become relevant again. I'd almost argue that Iowa State and Baylor are better opportunities than Colorado now. Shawn Watson worked there and knows how things work there; I really doubt he'd be interested in returning. In fact, he's practically said so two months ago.

“It's night and day,” he said of the environments in Nebraska and
Colorado. “It's not even close. The experience is real simple. Nebraska
loves their team. Nebraska appreciates football. That's it. I mean,
really, it's that simple. It's a passion. It's a love. It's not a
convenience thing. There's a difference. There's a huge difference.
Huge difference.”

I am almost certain if Hawkins is gone (and I think he is) Watson is the next head coach at CU, which at this point I'm not sure is a bad or good thing for NU...

I wonder when the deep pockets in Boulder will start assembling the cash to buy out Dan Hawkins' contract. Oh, wait. Someone would have to care. My bad.
