Days like today demonstrate why college football remains the #1 spectator
sport in the country.
The OU-NU game was a throwback to the 70's, a defensive masterpiece
by the Blackshirts that had me at the edge of my seat all evening. The
offense is still MIA, though.
Iowa's season turned on a turned ankle. Not only did they lose to
Northwestern (NU's 3rd straight win in Iowa City, something no team has
done in quite a while), Stanzi may miss the next two games, so Iowa's
dream of more than a Rose Bowl appearance has been traded for just hoping
to get to Pasadena.
Northwestern is bowl eligible for the third year in a row. Hopefully
they won't be left out when the bowl pairings are announced like they
were two years ago. (A win against Illinois or Wisconsin would make sure
that doesn't happen.) If you're in need of a cardiac workout, tune in
any Northwestern game, they've had the lead in the 2nd half of every game
this season.
Navy now has consecutive wins in South Bend. I wonder who the last coach at
Notre Dame was to lose TWO games to Navy in his career? I suspect this
may be a first. With Pitt and Stanford left on the schedule, this may not
be the last 'L' for the Domers. Could it be Goodbye Charlie?
That big 'GULP' you heard this afternoon was the BCS, which might have
to invite TWO interlopers to the table this year.
If FSU loses again (other than the nearly guaranteed loss against Florida,
though rivalry games are always unpredictable), Bobby Bowden might have to
opt for early retirement, his dream of overtaking JoePa in the career wins
is over, only partly courtesy of the NCAA. FSU at Wake Forest may be
an interesting game next weekend, neither team can afford another loss.
Who would have expected Kansas to go 5-0 then collapse like a house of
cards? Congratulations to Baylor for their first win against Mizzou since
the founding of the Big 12. Did Dan Hawkins save his job by defeating A&M?
