I had the same thought. If the NCAA were concerned about the student 
athletes (ROFL), it seems to me they could institute an early signing 
period, coupled perhaps with a rescission period to give the kid a 
chance to change his mind. For example, the kid signs a letter of 
intent, and it becomes binding - on both parties - 30 days later unless 
rescinded during that period.

To answer Mike's question, under contract law an offer - whatever its 
form - can usually be withdrawn until it has been accepted. In this 
case, I suppose acceptance can't come before next Wednesday.
