I think the key to the article is the paragraph that follows:
"Bodtmann, after a senior-season injury, lost weight and struggled to
match his level of play from a year earlier. In addition, the Huskers
face a numbers crunch to accommodate a sizeable class of newcomers and
deserving walk-ons like place-kicker Alex Henery after losing only 16
seniors on scholarships."
Sounds like the kid had an injury, had trouble regaining his skill
level, and the article mentions that Nebraska has tried to find him
scholarships elsewhere, but nobody's biting. While it sounds bad, I'm
not sure what Nebraska is supposed to do in this case. Doesn't sound
like he's 3, 4, or 5 star player or some other school would be right
there to grab him. His coach sure sounds sore, but if Nebraska only
has a certain number of scholarships to offer, and the kid isn't what
he once was when first recruited, then what? We're supposed to take
him and put him on a scholarship despite being somewhat damaged goods?
That would be great in the days of lots and lots of scholarships out
there, but that isn't the case anymore, and it hasn't been for quite
some time.
