[Husker] Nebraska Hockey-Question

Funny you should ask that, since that very topic is now in the news.

http://huskermike.blogspot.com/2009/01/does-wcha-now-secretly-covet-uno.html

When UNO started their hockey program, the original plan was to join the WCHA.  In fact, the goal judges at the first UNO games wore WCHA patches on their blazers.  After a year, the WCHA got cold feet as they saw other schools wanting to start or upgrade college hockey programs.  They decided that UNO should instead serve as a founding member of a new conference along with Bemidji (MN) State.  UNO decided they wanted no part of that arrangement, and found interest from the CCHA.

While the WCHA makes more sense geographically, the schools in the CCHA are better known to the casual sports fan in the Omaha area.  UNO fans like the rivalries with Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Notre Dame.

The CHA is now expected to disband after Air Force bolted for an eastern conference and Wayne (Michigan) State folded their hockey program.  The WCHA is now considering expanding to accomodate Bemidji State, but apparently has also made overtures to UNO and Northern Michigan to round out the WCHA to 12 teams.

I have waited a while for this subject to come up and perhaps somebody on the list has an answer. Why does UNO play in the CCHA and not the WCHA? Seems to me Denver, Minneapolis, and Grand Forks are a little closer to Omaha than Columbus, Sault Ste. Marie, and Kalamazoo. Thanks in advance.
