Or perhaps, if you aren't sure you want to be a member of this team, you'd better make up your mind before spring practice.  If your desire to be a member of this team is dependent on being the starting quarterback, then you should leave now.

If Witt would have competed for the starting quarterback without giving Pelini some sort of ultimatum, it might have been granted.  But by inquiring now before the competition even begins and making a demand of the coaches, he forced Pelini to take a hard line.

It sounds like Patrick Witt wanted to be a starting quarterback more than he wanted to be a Husker.  I wish him the best in pursuit of that goal.

Because Witt would have gone through spring practice and quite possibly
earned the starting job, and then decide to leave anyway. Not to mention
the reps he's take up on someone else if this indeed happen.

Pelini knew he had to cut bait here, for whatever reasons we may never
know.
