I was just looking at the Virginia Tech early season schedule and they are opening with some bruisers!
9/05 - Alabama (GA Dome)
9/12 - Marshall
9/19 - Nebraska
9/26 - Miami
Three top tier programs in the first four games! I don't know if it makes sense, but if the gamble pays off, no one can argue they don't deserve #1 if they win all four.
Actually I like our chances in this game even though VT returns more starters than us. Alabama prevents VT from even peeking at us in the fall practices. And while Marshall is not a power team, they are substantive enough that VT will need to focus on them that week. There might be the possibility that some will peek past NU to Miami as the latter is an ACC game that will be more important than the NU game.
The question is, of course, NU's new QB whoever that may be. Will we be settled enough to go into Blacksburg and pull of a bona fide upset? Possibly as our defense will be much better than last year (at least last years early season version). I think our running game backed by some passing will eventually score enough to let us prevail. (We should have won last year, IMHO). And yes, I know Taylor returns at QB and they don't lose a lot of starters. OTOH, I also didn't see much difference between NU's graduating group and their replacements -- with the obvious exception of Joey Ganz. But if Watson can make an all-time NU record breaker out of a career backup, what can he do with Lee/Witt/Spano/Green and Martinez?? Perhaps not enough to set new records, but enough to beat VT??? I think so.
Picture me with rose-colored glasses.
