Not always, but how do we know there just aren't any other scholarships
available for him? Do we also know this wasn't offered as an option but he
wanted to play football?

That's quite a jump from doing something that's perfectly legal and within
the schools rights to doing something that would be against the NCAA, not to
mention the law.
Withdrawing a scholarship offer because the kid is no longer desirable
athletically is not comparable to taking illegal substances, capping
someone's knees or paying players. Cmon man.
As Roger said and I added to, if I received an academic scholarship based on
my efforts through my junior year of high school, but bombed my classes my
senior year I WOULD EXPECT to lose that scholarship and you would too.
