[Husker] Mike Leach Suspended by Texas Tech

(great quote, Mike)

I agree that it doesn't sound like young Mr James was physically harmed by
Leach's actions, but let's not lose sight of what may have been at work
here. And no, I'm not talking about the machinations of the TTU athletic
dept vs Mike Leach.

Why is the head coach dealing with this kid's injury? Isn't there a cadre of
doctors and trainers who manage the actual treatment of injuries?

If James was directed by Leach to do anything that day other than practice
on the field with the team, I suspect it might be a case of the coach
accusing the player of sandbagging. (valid in this case or not, is
immaterial)

In other words, he was being punished for not practicing due to injury. The
danger this represents is that you create a culture of "don't report
injuries" unless you want to be singled out.

Sure, back in the day we used to run with no water in the hot sun until we
puked our guts out. It's what makes you tough... it also can kill you.

Ignorant bravado is not something we should glorify. Now that we know more
and more about the long term effects of head injuries, we need to act on
that new information.

Too bad if any of us feel our entertainment is curtailed by NOT getting to
see some young man's head getting bashed in. Some things are more precious-
dare I say it, even than football.

None of us can be sure, but this particular fracas may not be just another
case of extreme PC-ness. It might even be the right thing to do with a coach
as petty and immature as one who feels the need to insult the players'
girlfriends when his team loses.
