I currently live in Chicago and its been all over the paper every day. The
big 10 is serious about this. They want a playoff game and need an even
number of teams to do it. At this point, I think you can almost count on it
happening for the 2011 season.
The big 10 is arrogant with their big 10 TV network. They have a huge
population base with Chicago, Detroit, Indianapolis, Cleveland and other
major metropolitan areas.
At this point they are putting everything on the table. They don't want to
restrict to 10 but they are looking strongly at adding 1, 3 or 5 teams.
Whatever it takes to get to a playoff game is what I'm hearing and that just
means an even number of teams.
Yes, they want Notre Dame. Notre Dame has said over and over again they are
not doing it. They just hired their savior and have their own deal with
NBC, they don't need a conference and their history and tradition is
independence and they want to maintain that. Notre Dame is out.
Yes, I think Rutgers, Pitt and Syracuse are viable options for them to raid
from, expand east and make it work. I'm not as concerned about this since
it doesn't really affect me. I hope they do it.
I'm more concerned about the Big 10 going hard after Missouri and making an
attractive offer to them. I'm certain Missouri would entertain the idea.
Missouri will be on tv all over these much closer, easier to recruit areas,
a lot easier to travel than go to Texas all the time. Missouri already has
a rival in Illinois. They will strike a deal to get more money than they
are currently getting from the Big 12. From the Big 10 perspective, It's
closer to the Big 10 region and they pick up the Kansas City metro area. It
could be a win win for both the big 10 and missouri.
That leaves the big 12 out. My question is this. I'm not saying this
happens but what if it does? Let's suppose just for a minute Missouri
becomes a traitor and jumps to the Big 10. What happens to the Big 12? Do
we pick up a new school in the south texas region and realign north/south
divisions? Who could we possibly find to join us that would be worthy in
the north? Do we drop Baylor or something and become the Big 10 and no more
divisions?
I don't want this to happen but I think it very likely could happen. Just
playing a friendly game of what if?
