Regardless of who they might go after, that kid will know that there
is some stiff competition from other QB's in front of him. Next year
there will be sophomores Spano (RS), Martinez and Green, seniors Lee
and Washington, and two others (sophomores Broekemeier and Kellogg)
listed on the team roster. With three of the sophomores (Martinez,
Spano and Green) touted as the next big thing, I'd think they'll have
some difficulty convincing a highly rated high school senior QB to
take that kind of chance. At this point in the season, if there are
any Payton Manning's out there, they are likely to have been wrapped
up by other programs by now.
I believe Watson when he says they'll go after a QB, but I'm pretty
sure he doesn't expect to get someone as highly rated as Gabbert was.
Frankly, I didn't see Gabbert as someone who could stand head and
shoulders above what we already have, and not because he isn't as tall
as his brother. He's good, but I don't see him with quite the same
skills as his brother. I'm more interested in where Watson and Pelini
see this offense going next, and I really wonder if we'll get a peek
of that in the bowl game. I hope so. They've got three weeks. And
that might determine who is the QB next year. We seem to have a
pretty good lot to pick from.
