[Husker] Nebraska's Offense

When Nebraska played ISU, they were plagued with injuries. Had Roy Helu
been healthy, he would not have fumbled the ball and Nebraska would have
had at least an additional 14 points. It does beg the question as to why
he was playing injured. These are decisions of the staff and we may never
know all the details. I don't know who else may have been injured when
Nebraska played TTech and ISU (besides Rex Burkhead).

I agree with the post regarding lack of production at wide receiver.
However, Nebraska lost a lot with the graduation of Joe Ganz, Todd
Peterson, Nate Swift, Matt Slauson, and Lydon Murtha. And remember that
Bo Pelini was hired because of the problems Nebraska had on defense, so
his focus was there.

Coach Watson is a good coach, but I don't see what his game plan is. It
looks like he just calls plays without setting up anything. Coach Osborne
used to view calling an offense as a chess match. To me, it doesn't look
like that is Coach Watson's approach. Again, I am speaking as a fan
watching on games on TV and I don't have any details as to what is really
going on.

If Nebraska had some San Francisco 49-ers or Green Bay Packer style west
coast plays, then I believe there would be more production. I have always
felt that these versions of the west coast offense was similar to
Nebraska's option attack in as much as it is designed to get the running
back into space. Instead of a pitch play, short passes are used to get
the running back away from the line of scrimmage and to make the
secondary make tackles.

As I have posted previously, now that Coach Pelini has fixed the defense,
he will be turning his attention to the offense. I am sure that he will
be seeking guidance from Coach Osborne. It is fairly obvious to me that
Coach Pelini has a lot of respect for Coach Osborne. It will be
interesting to see how Coach Watson will react to this. I am sure that he
will be okay with it.

While it is easy to say fire so and so, isn't that what got Nebraska into
this situation in the first place? AD Pederson fired Coach Solich during
the season that Coach Solich finally stepped out from underneath Coach
Osborne's shadow and made the football team his own. I for one would have
given Coach Solich another two or three years before making any changes
instead of firing him that year he initially hired Coach Cotton, Coach
Pelini, etc.

One good thing that came from all that is Nebraska hired Coach Blake and
he brought Ndamukong Suh to the program. So, every cloud has a silver
lining.

By the by, I know that there is some (may be a lot) of animosity toward
Coach Callahan, but people need to remember that he stepped in after AD
Pederson fired Coach Solich. While his time at Nebraska was not the
greatest, he took the reigns at the worst possible time - after the hand
picked coach by Nebraska's legend had been fired. Maybe Coach Callahan
wasn't a good fit, but a least he stepped up to the plate (and again, he
brought Coach Blake to Nebraska, and ...).

I for one get a little tired hearing all the negative personal
superlative about players or coaches when things don't go well. While I
believe that AD Pederson thought he was fixing Nebraska football, his
approach just didn't fit this program. I cannot believe that he took the
job at Nebraska to ruin the program. It just doesn't make sense. I also
don't believe that Coach Callahan and his staff (even though I cussed out
Coach Cosgrove a many time on football Saturday while watching from my
couch) tried to ruin the program. They did what they thought they needed
to win. No coach likes losing.

I do hope that Nebraska works hard to keep the recruits and get the
de-commits to re-commit. Maybe that more than anything will be the
catalyst to spurn the improvements in the offense we all know can happen.

I have nothing to but complete and utter confidence in Coach Pelini. He
has taken a 5-7 program to the conference championship. I fully expect
Nebraska to win the Big-XII Championship next season (my bold prediction
#3). I and will make a new bold prediction right now: within the next
three seasons (2010-2012)Nebraska will be playing for the national
championship. Most likely this will happen three seasons from this one.

Next year's schedule is okay, the non-conference is pretty easy.
Washington will be a good challenge. The Big-XII schedule while
challenging will be aided by the fact the Texas will be regrouping after
the offensive players they graduate (although the defense will not
graduation too many people). Nebraska football is back baby and that's
the way I like!

Look for me at the Holiday Bowl. I will be the one wearing red!

Go Big Red!
