Let's keep in mind that the University was listed as one of SEVENTY potential sites for eight to twelve host locations. Based on size and geographical location, I can name five or six sites off of the top of my head that are near certain locks as hosting sites, including the New Meadowlands, Gillette Stadium, Dolphin Stadium, Soldier Field, the New Cowboys Stadium and a So Cal location (likely the Rose Bowl or the by then renovated L.A. Coliseum).

That leaves only a handful of additional hosting sites, and given the number of larger facilities available, and the number of smaller soccer only MLS facilities available, it would be a LONGSHOT at best that the University would even make it as a finalist, never mind as an actual host site.

As for Field Turf vs real grass, that is not an issue. Field Turf is a FIFA recommended surface, but each field must go through a battery of tests to attain FIFA 2-Star status before it is recommended (approved). While most of the facilities listed above are natural grass, some, such as Gillette Stadium are already 2-Star recommended Field Turf facilities and have hosted FIFA matches in the past.

A FIFA World Cup qualifier was never coming to Lincoln, so this is much ado about nothing.

Have a great day!

Jeff
