The comments in the LJS seem to indicate that part of UNL's reason for
declining to be involved in any World Cup bid is that they don't want to
replace the Fieldturf with grass, even temporarily.
Whether that's even a condition imposed by FIFA or US Soccer is unclear
from their websites. If it was not, then it's a rather lame excuse.
Having been in Berlin in 2006, just ahead of when they hosted the World
Cup Finals, choosing not to get involved in this bid at all strikes me
as extremely short-sighted on UNL's part.
No, Lincoln wouldn't be likely to host the Finals, which is even bigger
than a Super Bowl, but even hosting a few first round games could have a
big impact on the local economy and on UNL's visibility throughout the
world.
Perlman and UNL said yes to Larry the Cable Guy, but no to the World Cup.
