I told the list after the first game that the defensive line would need scheme as opposed to brawn. Unfortunately, neither really worked that well on Saturday. Scheme did help a few times in the red zone to hold them to field goals, but my goodness, we are substandard here compared to what we have been accustomed to. I really feel for those four. It is not that they are not trying......as a matter of fact, their effort is really quite good.....they just are not the athletes that it takes to get it done like we are used to.
As I also stated after the first game, we have some trouble on kick off coverage with are speed guys who sometimes get wrangled up and can't get off even a mediocre block. This needs to be corrected. I don't know how and don't pretend to know how......maybe we just don't have the personnel.
I am going into "turtle mode" for the next two weeks. Hiding in my shell and not coming out. This will get very ugly the next two Saturday's and we will really see how far we are behind to the other upper echelon teams talent wise. The good news is that K State, I State and Baylor are worse off than we are so I think a 6-6 is still obtainable.
I have never refereed college ball, but did high school several years ago. You can say what you want, but the late hit call was correct.
