Playing back the play a couple of times it looked like Suh was aiming for where the player was going to land, which was out of bounds. It was pretty clear that upon looking at it, that Suh should have been able to tell that he was not going to help push the player out of bounds.

I'm not sure the whistle has anything to do with it. You can't hit a player that is already out of bounds. Granted it wasn't a vicious hit but was probably the correct call.
Going to bat for your player in baseball is one thing, the manager merely gets tossed from the game. When you do it in football or basketball you directly hurt you team by giving up yardage or free throws.
