[Husker] Breakdown (was cupcake games / schedule)

Well, of course you need to score more points than your opponent. That's a no duh.

But if we try to get into a shootout with Missouri, we're playing right into their hands. Their offense has moved up and down the field all season long, and they rarely make a mistake. I didn't get to see much of the Tigers game against Nevada, but a Mizzou fan I know pointed out to me that on Saturday, Chase Daniel had more touchdowns than incompletions.

That's obscene.

If you can play a ball-control offense, you allow your defense to stay off the field for longer stretches. That means more rest, and also gives your coaches more opportunities to make adjustments. Many fans noted how much time the coaches spent with the defense after New Mexico State nearly drove the field on the opening drive on Saturday night. What would have happend if the Husker offense had gone 3 and out on their first possession, or perhaps scored on a long play. Those adjustments might not have been made, and the defense wouldn't have been ready to go out.

Plus, keeping Missouri's offense on the sideline might make them a little nervous or fidgety. Maybe when they get out on the field again, they might try to force the ball and play a little more reckless.

Look at last fall's NU-Kansas game. That game got out of control in part because Nebraska decided to get into a track meet with Kansas...and couldn't keep up.
