These after only a quickie look at the game tape.
1) Parity continues raising its ugly head as evidenced in the
Huskers' first three opponents, particularly NMSU. I live a mere 100
miles from Las Crucses, New Mexico, and although I don't follow Aggie
football all that closely I can assure you the 2008 Aggie team is
light years better than the Aggie team I saw get clobbered in Lincoln
somewhere back in the 1990's. Also, SJSU is beginning to regain some
of its former stature. For that matter, WMU put a good team on the
field.
2) Enough of this "cupcake" talk! It's so y e s t e r d a y. (Last
year Michigan thought Appalacha State a cupcake.) The continuing rise
of "lesser" powers is a trend still in its infancy.
3) While Niles Paul's KO return last week was nothing short of
brilliant, I'll bet Ron Brown thinks his outstanding block on an
Aggie DB during Mike McNeill's TD run constituted Paul's early-season
highlight.
4) How could we not expect great things from a DB with a name like
Lance Thorell, redshirt freshman from Loomis? Not listed on the depth
chart and never "mentioned in dispatches," he played quite a bit and
played well except for a couple of freshman errors. Bet he's on
scholarship before long.
5) Hunter Teatafiller's return to the field seemed as important to
the team as was Lydon Murtha's. Loved it when Hunter played fullback
during Lucky's last TD.
6) Colorcaster Matt Davison said that Patrick Witt's getting some
playing time was very important, and it may well turn out to be so.
Witt's two fumbles are something he'll never forget and will work on
hard in practice. If anything should happen to Ganz (Heaven forbid!),
Witt won't be fumbling if and when the game is on the line.
7) I also agree with Davison that Aggie QB Chase Holbrook will be
playing on Sundays next year. Holbrook seems typical of the
"anonymous" college quarterbacks that turn up so often on NFL teams.
Not that I give a rat's rectum about the NFL or any of its teams.
8) Finally, for the first time the 2008 Husker squad bore a
resemblance to the Huskers of old and while it may not reach the
pinnacles of earlier years, movement in the right direction seems
apparent. With almost half of next year's recruiting quota already
committed and with the Pellini crew combing the hinterlands, a slowly
growing confidence for the future seems justified.
