Well, I'm not so sure it was entirely his fault, Bill Byrne used to
grumble about how he'd call all the teams in 1-A and nobody wanted to
play Nebraska.  And Bill Byrne was probably better liked and admired
by his peers than SP was.

He also articulated perhaps the best statement I've seen of a reasonable
design for an OOC schedule:

1.  No National Championship game in September
2.  One top 25 caliber team (usually a home/home series)
3.  One or two top 50 caliber teams
