This was not a good game for Nebraska on either side of the ball.
However, it could have been a lot worse. When the score was 14-12 late
in the 3rd quarter, I felt like it would be a repeat of last year's Ball
State game or the 2004 game against Southern Miss. The difference was
that the team finally woke up in the 4th quarter of this one and was
able to put the game away late. If Callahan was still coaching this
team, he probably would have found a way to lose.
In my humble opinion, I think that we will probably wind up with a
fairly mediocre defense this year. However, one must realize that a
mediocre defense will be a significant improvement over last year, when
Nebraska was in the bottom 15 of almost every defensive statistic. I
honestly think it will be a struggle to get to 7-5 this year, but I
think that is an attainable record. Considering that was also Bob
Stoops' record at Oklahoma in 1999, it wouldn't put Bo in bad company.
The people who were expecting Bo to come in and immediately turn us into
contenders for the Big 12 North will be disappointed. It is going to
take a lot of time to undo the Steve Pederson error.
I was most disappointed with the offense today, but most of their faults
(penalties and stupid turnovers caused by bad decisions and mental
mistakes) are correctable. I predict that next week will be a lot
better, and Nebraska will put the game away early.
